The Automation specialist supports automation engineering activities for strategic capital and site operational improvement projects. This position also provides automation support for commissioning, qualification, and manufacturing operations. The incumbent must have a proven record of working independently within a matrixed project team and providing analysis and appropriate solutions. This position is also responsible for implementing new solutions and modifications to our existing manufacturing process systems while adhering to established Engineering best practices and regulatory compliance requirements.
The incumbent needs to be able to demonstrate and communicate good technical understanding of the automation systems and defend technical design decisions. The incumbent also needs to provide guidance to other stakeholders on the team to ensure automation deliverables and timelines are met.

Main Responsibilities:
Design development and specifications. Responsible for automation engineering deliverables that meet URS and compliance requirements including best practices guidelines. Depending on project, some deliverables may be generated internally while other times by external engineering. Perform appropriate reviews with stakeholders and ensure internal or external designs meet system requirements and adhere to specifications.
Commissioning and qualification execution for accountable systems. Review C&Q test plans for technical content. Support mechanical completion and start-up. Participate and lead FAT and Critical test plan execution.
Technical engineering support to manufacturing sites. Provide technical guidance to site engineering and maintenance teams upon request and implement system improvements. Responsible to understand site specific standards and procedures.
Ability to work in a collaborative shared space in a large and complex project environment where quick critical thinking and decision-making is required.
Technical aptitude/understanding across a broad number of subjects including vaccine processes and equipment, HVAC systems, building and equipment maintenance.
Technical aptitude/understanding of digital systems.
About You
Minimum requirements:
Bachelor's Degree or a College Diploma in Engineering, Science or Computer Science.
Minimum of 3 years direct experience in applied automation engineering.
Additional experience in operational support, equipment start-up, qualification and/or validation will be an asset.
Soft and Technical Skills:
Individual must have strong knowledge of process control systems (PCS/DCS).
Working knowledge of Emerson’s DeltaV platform is required. Experience with PLCs, Ignition, or PI is an asset.
Working knowledge of unit operations typically used in biotech and vaccine manufacturing such as bulk manufacturing, downstream operations, formulation, steaming (SIP) and cleaning (CIP) is an asset but is not mandatory.
Must understand the relationship between Good Manufacturing Practices, industry standards and their application to the manufacturing process.
Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external team members is essential.
Strong analytical skills (engineering analysis).
