Job Title: Research and Development Laboratory Supervisor

Location: Framingham, MA

The Cell Culture Development (CCD) labs are state-of-the-art bioprocess development facilities where operational excellence drives innovation. Featuring bioreactors in various scales, process analytical technologies, and strategic integration and automation, these labs require leadership that balances scientific rigor with operational efficiency. The CCD Lab Operations Manager will lead the transformation of laboratory operations through Lean principles, continuous improvement methodologies, and data-driven decision making. This role will establish and maintain operational excellence systems that maximize productivity, minimize waste, and create a culture of continuous improvement. The manager will implement standardized work processes, visual management systems, and performance metrics to drive operational efficiency while ensuring scientific excellence.

Main Responsibilities:

Lead operational excellence initiatives across the CCD labs, including:

    • Implementing and sustaining 5S workplace organization systems

    • Developing standard work procedures to ensure consistency and quality

    • Creating value stream maps to identify and eliminate waste

    • Implementing metrics and KPIs to track operational performance

Manage a team of 3-5 lab technicians to support daily laboratory operations, including:

    • HSE operations (e.g., eyewash station and satellite accumulation inspections)

    • Maintaining inventory

    • Daily maintenance of upstream equipment (e.g., FLEX2 calibrations and consumables replacements)

    • Troubleshooting equipment malfunctions

    • Assisting with equipment operation

    • Support upstream cell culture development activities, including all aspects of cell culture scale up, execution, and wrap-up of experiments

    • Manage the schedule of cell culture equipment and resolve scheduling conflicts as they arise.

    • Manage execution and installation of CAPEX orders

    • Manage and coordinate equipment service, annual certifications, and calibrations

    • Serve as primary contact for facilities requests and issues and liaison between research lab groups and contract service providers and ITS.

    • Work with HSE and monitor lab members to ensure a safe working environment and adherence to company policies. Coordinate maintenance activities of laboratory spaces.

    • Handle procurement, materials management, tracking and logistics including shipping and receiving of consumables, equipment and others.

    • Develop synergistic relationships with key suppliers to ensure smooth and timely operations of critical equipment.

    • Support weekend work as needed.

    • Provide troubleshooting and problem-solving guidance for daily project and development issues, and implement preventative/corrective actions

Create and maintain a continuous improvement culture by:

    • Facilitating regular kaizen events to address operational challenges

    • Training staff in problem-solving methodologies

    • Recognizing and rewarding improvement suggestions

    • Documenting and standardizing best practices

    • Develop and monitor operational metrics and dashboards to drive data-based decision making and continuous improvement

About You

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. with 6 years (M.S. with 4 years ) in Biology, Bioprocessing, Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related fields is preferred.

  • Experience managing laboratory operations with demonstrated success in process optimization and efficiency improvements

  • Bioreactor cell culture operational experience at the benchtop, pilot plant or GMP scale.

  • Proven ability to implement structured problem-solving methodologies and drive continuous improvement initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification or experience in Lean (5S, Six Sigma, or other operational excellence methodologies); Certification or experience in project management; Change management experience and ability to drive cultural transformation

  • Experience implementing visual management systems, standard work procedures, and KPI tracking in laboratory environments

  • Experience operating ambr bioreactors

  • Experience with SAP (preferred) or other Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system
