Integration Platform Engineer

Role Overview 

The Integration Platform Engineer designs, builds, and operates the integrations that move data and events between the enterprise systems the business runs on. This is a hands-on engineering role covering application integration, event streaming, data integration, managed file transfer, and business-to-business exchange. 

The integration estate is deliberately heterogeneous. It spans modern cloud-native integration alongside established enterprise middleware, and includes MuleSoft, Azure Integration Services, TIBCO, Informatica Cloud, Solace, Axway, Kong, Apache Kafka, and native AWS services. Engineers in this role are expected to build fluently on the right tool for each pattern, and to help consolidate and modernise the estate over time. 

The platform is run both as an internal product and as a managed service, across Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. 

Key Responsibilities 

Integration Design and Development 

• Design and build integrations using established patterns for request-reply, publish-subscribe, orchestration, choreography, and batch processing. 

• Develop interfaces on the platforms in scope, including MuleSoft, Azure Integration Services, TIBCO, and Informatica Cloud. 

• Implement data mapping, transformation, enrichment, validation, and error handling with clear reprocessing paths. 

• Build reusable connectors, templates, and integration assets that reduce delivery effort for future work. 

Event-Driven and Streaming Integration 

• Build event-driven integrations using Apache Kafka, Solace, and other cloud-native eventing services. 

• Design topics, schemas, and contracts with appropriate schema governance and versioning. 

• Implement patterns for ordering, idempotency, replay, and dead-letter handling. 

Data, File, and B2B Integration 

• Build data integration pipelines covering extract, transform, and load, change data capture, and bulk movement using Informatica Cloud and equivalent tooling. 

• Operate and develop managed file transfer and secure file exchange using Axway and SFTP-based patterns. 

• Implement and support business-to-business and EDI exchanges with external trading partners. 

Enterprise Systems Connectivity 

• Integrate core enterprise platforms including SAP S/4HANA, ECC, and BTP or Cloud Platform Integration using IDocs, BAPIs, and modern APIs. 

• Integrate commercial and medical systems including Salesforce and Veeva. 

• Integrate manufacturing, laboratory, and quality systems including MES, LIMS, and SCADA environments. 

Operations, Security, and Support 

• Own the availability, throughput, latency, and capacity of the interfaces in scope. 

• Instrument integrations for observability using Datadog, Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, Cribl, and Observe. 

• Contribute to incident response, root-cause analysis, problem management, and corrective actions. 

• Implement secure connectivity using OAuth2, mutual TLS, certificate-based authentication, and secure file transfer protocols. 

• Manage secrets and certificates through HashiCorp Vault, CyberArk, and cloud-native key services. 

Technical Craft and Engineering Practices 

• Manage integration artefacts as code in Git, with automated build, test, and deployment through GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps. 

• Build automated unit, contract, and end-to-end tests, including negative and volume scenarios. 

• Use AI-assisted engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot and Claude Code to accelerate mapping, test generation, and documentation, applying appropriate review and technical judgement. 

Collaboration and Ways of Working 

• Work within an agile product team with a shared backlog and defined customers. 

• Partner with business analysts and functional teams to translate process requirements into robust interface designs. 

• Work with API, data, cloud, and application teams to agree contracts and ownership boundaries. 

Qualifications 

Required 

• Demonstrated capability in integration or middleware engineering, typically gained across five to eight years of professional experience. 

• Hands-on delivery experience with at least one enterprise integration or iPaaS platform, such as MuleSoft, Azure Integration Services, TIBCO, Informatica Cloud, or Boomi. 

• Strong command of integration patterns, message design, transformation, and error-handling strategies. 

• Experience with event-driven integration using Kafka, Solace, or a comparable platform. 

• Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language such as Python, JavaScript, or Java. 

• Experience integrating at least one major enterprise system such as SAP, Salesforce, Veeva, Workday, or ServiceNow. 

• Strong troubleshooting skills across network, message, transformation, and endpoint layers. 

• Clear written and verbal communication in English, including working directly with business stakeholders. 

Preferred 

• Experience with managed file transfer and B2B or EDI exchange, ideally using Axway. 

• Experience with data integration disciplines including extract, transform, and load, and change data capture. 

• Experience with Kong or another API gateway, and with API-led connectivity approaches. 

• Experience integrating GxP-relevant manufacturing or laboratory systems such as MES or LIMS. 

• Experience delivering within a validated, GxP, or otherwise regulated environment, including awareness of data-protection obligations such as GDPR. 

• Certifications such as MuleSoft Certified Developer, Confluent Kafka Developer, or AWS or Azure associate level. 

• A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information technology, or a related discipline.
